It is now winter time and the Jews are given winter clothes. Elie and the rest of the Jews continue to lose their faith in God completely. A rabbi tells him that God is no longer there. Rosh Hashanah arrives and Elie says,"What are you my God? How do You compare to this stricken mass gathered to affirm to You their faith, their anger, their defience? What does Your grandeur mean, Master of the Universe, in the face of all this cowardice, this decay, and this misery?..." Faith is no longer their in most of the Jewish people. Eliezer thinks it is God who is the blame for killing the innocent people and torchering them, but its not. People kill people, God has nothing to do with this tragedy. Same thing with guns; guns don't kill people-people kill people!
Eliezer has a foot problem where his foot swells up and causes him not to be able to walk. The doctor tells him he needs surgery or he might have to get a fake leg. Elie is scared to get this procedure done, but becomes brave and has his foot fixed. He is unable to walk for two weeks after this surgery, so he can heal. The doctor tells him he had a ball of puss that needed to be removed. He finds his dad when chaos happens again. They walk together in the snow as it is falling and cannon shots are heard near them. The horror never ends for them.
